Secret Invasion was…not great. All throughout the show, I was rooting for it. I thought it started off strong and then went downhill so fast–even getting a 13% rotten tomatoes rating–by far the worst for Marvel. So I’m going to explain exactly what went wrong with this show–the behind-the-scenes problems that plagued it, the state of marvel going forward–and why this show was the greatest disappointment ever in the MCU.

Doug: Biggest disappointment ever? Geez that seems like an exaggeration.

Well Doug, let me take you back to 2003, to the movie X2: X-Men united. Superhero movies were mostly missed until this point–the year before we had raimi spider-man, and this movie finally got the X-Men 100% right. Jean Gray had just died sacrificing herself for the X-men, and just before the credits, we got this tease [clip].

That was teasing the dark phoenix saga–one of the greatest all time comics stories ever that comic fans never thought we’d get to see on the big screen. And when X-men 3 came out 3 years later, what we got was a low-budget, half assed interpretation of this epic story. That’s how secret invasion made me feel.

Doug: But it's not fair to compare the show to the comic book.

You’re right–so I’m going to avoid comparing this show to the events of the comic. The comic was this sprawling crossover event filled with superheroes–but the show adapts a small part of the comic, where Nick Fury goes off on hisnown to root out skrulls. So I will compare this show to those comics, where it’s appropriate.,

The secret invasion director Ali Selim, even said to Variety: “Marvel has a very devoted — even rabid — fan base who have expectations and when their expectations aren’t fulfilled, they move in the other direction' they give it a thumbs down...is it our job to fulfill their expectations?"

Look man, if you made a bad show, don't blame fans for saying it's a bad show., But, as I’ll prove throughout this video, the show is not bad because of this director. There was a confluence of events that hampered Secret INvasion, which made it almost impossible to tell a compelling story. But before we can explain what went wrong behind the scenes, we have to talk about what was actually wrong with the show.

And there was a lot wrong with this show–ain't is a failure. Now I don't use that word often–I love MCU stories, and this one has to rank near the bottom of anyone’s l'ist–but the worst MCU show is still better than most TV shows. And the secret invasion was miles ahead of the Inhumans or Helstrom.

But this show might have been doomed to fail, because the premise of the show was flawed from the start. The MCU was not in the right place to tell the story of a secret invasion.

So Back to secret INvasion–I think the context behind the show was flawed from the start. This is one of those times when I have to compare this story to the comics, and to show why maybe this adaptation wasn't right for the MCU/. in the comics, the skrulls have been villains since Fantastic Four number 2. Some skrulls are good guys, but comic readers generally accept that the skrulls are villains.

So, when a Secret INvasion crossover was announced, we understood what it meant–the skrulls were about to hatch the villainous plan they’d been building up toward since 1961. But in the MCU, the movie captain marvel went for this reversal to make the skrulls good guys. [straw drink]. Now for the movie and for Carol's character development, this was a great choice. It showed Carol that she had been fed lies about the war, made her question her identity, and humanized refugees.

We are going to break down lots of hidden Star Wars details, and a little later I’m going to talk about what Marrok revealed.

Doug: Yeah that was lame. I thought he was going to be Ezra or something.

No, actually the marrok reveal is badass, and a little later I’m going to explain why. And of course we’re going to talk about that ending, and how it was actually foreshadowed by the brand new, canon book, Return of the Jedi, from a certain point of view.

So let’s break down this episode: the fallen Jedi. The episode starts with huyang repairing the ship, calling out to home one. Now home one is the capital ship commanded by Admiral ackbar in Return of the Jedi, where he said this [it’s a trap]. And I neglected to mention last week that the meeting room where Hera talked to a hologram of mon mothma was also where mon mothma announced the attack on the death star [many bothans died…].

But my favorite easter egg in the episode might have been this [this is fulcrum]. So this is Ahsoka’s code name, that she used in Rebels [clip]. Now the show rebels kept this a secret for the whole first season, [clip] but there was a value–when Hera communicated with Fulcrum, we saw Ahsoka ‘s facial marking a s her call sign. Like on the apprentice lives tee shirt.

And it also came to be used by other rebel spies, like agent Callus, who used a hologram of ahsoka facial markings, just like on the apprentice lives tee shirt. who used this same hologram. But the clone wars final seasons revealed that “fulcrum” was the name of Anakin's personal channel during the clone wars [clip]. So this brief name drop of this easter egg is actually very subtle foreshadowing anakin's return at the end of this episode.

So then Ahsoka gives Sabine a little foreshadowing heavy pep talk, doing the ol’ “can I count on you” to foreshadow that no, indeed, you cannot count on her. But in this talk, Ahsoka calls thrawn [heir to the empire], which is of course the series of novels that introduced thrawn way back in 1991. Ahsoka is setting up Sabine for an all or nothing choice–saying that she will have to leave Ezra behind, if they have to make that sacrifice.

This mirrors the sacrifice of Ezra at the end of rebels, when he used the prugill to transport Thrawn and himself to another galaxy, separating himself from his friends [clip, always the plan].

Doug: Kind of like how Spock sacrificed his life in wrath of Khan, but then the whole crew risked their lives to get them back.

That’s true, but I–

So back to Ahsoka. This whole sequence where huyang is repairing the ship wheel they hide from the plot feels very much like the empire strikes back to me, when the millennium falcon is hiding in the asteroid belt. In both sequences they're repairing the ship, but you also have this fear of encroaching danger.

But speaking of fear, how badass is this line when Baylon talks about Ahsoka being formidable [not of fear..experience]. So , so frickin’ cool. Ray Stevenson was some of Hollywood's most underrated actors for years–and it's a shame that he dind't live to see who this performance is being received by fans. He adds this kind of elegance to Baylon-like Alec Guiness’s obi wan, he creates this idea of a debonair knight from a bygone age.

If you found yourself on Halsey’s Instagram in October 2024, you’d have a hard time finding Halsey anywhere. Instead, you’d come face to face with Dolly Parton, Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchell and… oh, wait that IS Halsey! Fans have long marveled at the pop virtuoso’s world building skills (who could forget the ornate, gothic scenery of 2021’s ‘If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power?’), but it feels like Halsey has taken the biggest creative swing of her career with ‘The Great Impersonator.’ She labels it a “confessional concept album.” As the October 25 release day approached, fans watched her inhabit a kaleidoscope of musical heroes. That was only the beginning. We decided to take the nostalgic trip one step further with these Official Live Performances, seeking to answer the questions: “What if Halsey arrived in a different time? What if she recorded in the 1970s, 80s, 90s or early 2000’s?” So we built four interconnected stages reflective of each decade - with vintage outfits and instruments to match. We captured the action on 35mm film for that timeless feel. Leaning into personal authenticity, Halsey did her own makeup. Team Vevo and Team Halsey’s long history of collaboration allowed this to be one of the series’ most ambitious shoots. The fun kicks off on album release day, and spills into the next week.
